Today is International Women’s Day
Letter to the Editor
Saturday is International Women’s Day.
It is being celebrated throughout the planet by progressive people both as a triumph but also as a reminder that the struggle for women’s liberation is far from over.
Full equality for women must be a priority.
In Canada, it can only be achieved if women can participate on equal terms in all areas of Canada’s social, political, and economic life.
When societies evolved from their tribal state where land was held in common, to one where it passed into private hands, women lost their status as free members of society, They became chattels tied to the male-owned property to ensure it was HIS offspring who would inherit his land and possessions.
This state of affairs has been an integral part of all class societies from slave and feudal to the present.
If women succeeded in breaking out of these male-inflicted barriers, it was the exception rather than the rule.
When society accepts a greater responsibility in assisting women in the rearing and care of their children; if women have equal opportunities to realize their potential without suffering economic and financial penalties; if they receive the same benefits for their contribution to Canada’s wealth as men — Only then can we boast that they have been fully liberated,
The struggle continues.
