Weather warnings issued for nearby Highway 3 passes
If you are planning on departing or entering the East Kootenay via Highway 3 today, be aware of two weather warnings for Kootenay Pass and Crowsnest Pass in Alberta.
Environment Canada has issued a strong wind warning for Crowsnest Pass and another snowfall warning for Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.
Strong winds will develop over southwestern Alberta this evening. Wind gusts up to 100 km/h will occur, with the strongest winds nearest the Rocky Mountains, Environment Canada stated.
“These winds are likely to blow around some of the recently fallen snow, which could locally reduce visibility.
“Conditions will improve by Sunday morning. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches. “Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds.”
A frontal system approaching from the Pacific Ocean will spread snow to Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass tonight.
Snow will ease to a few flurries Sunday morning. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow, Environment Canada forecasts.
Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.
The site shiftintowinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go.
Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains. Road conditions are available at drivebc.ca.
