Wind warning in effect for East Kootenay
Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for the East Kootenay.
Strong wind gusts that may cause damage are expected or occurring throughout the East Kootenay, with potential for damaging wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h this afternoon and evening.
“Very strong wind gusts leading to potential broken tree limbs and power outages. Boaters and watercraft users are advised of sudden strong gusts over lakes. Motorists are advised of potential strong cross winds over highways susceptible to cross winds,” Environment Canada stated.
“A vigorous cold front will cross the province today bringing with it very strong winds aloft. While most areas will see fairly strong wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h; locally, wind gusts may exceed 90 km/h, aided by thunderstorms or showers that help drag the very strong winds aloft down to the surface.
“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches. Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds.”
