Winter storm warning for Kootenay Pass

If you must drive over Kootenay Pass today, heads up.

Environment Canada has issued a heavy snowfall travel alert for Highway 3 – Kootenay Pass and Paulson Summit.

“A disturbance will continue to bring snow, at times heavy, to Kootenay Pass and Paulson Summit before tapering off late this afternoon. Snow levels will hover near 1,300 metres through the event. As of 5 a.m. this morning, up to 23 cm of snow has fallen over Kootenay Pass and up to 20 cm for Paulson Summit.

An additional five to 10 cm is expected today.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions,” Environment Canada noted.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.”

The site shiftintowinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.
