Winter Storm Warning for Kootenay Pass
Following yesterday’s snowfall warning for Kootenay Pass is today’s winter storm warning, issued this morning (Nov. 4).
Environment Canada is alerting residents and travelers in the Coquihalla Highway – Hope to Merritt, Highway 3 – Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass areas of incoming strong gusty winds and heavy snow.
From now until tomorrow, expect rapidly accumulating snow and blowing snow creating near zero visibilities and treacherous driving conditions, as a strong Pacific frontal system begins pushing into the B.C. interior this morning.
“Snow at times heavy is expected to begin for these mountain passes later this morning before tapering off overnight. Lower elevations will likely see a change to rain by this afternoon, but snowfall accumulations are expected to range from near 20 cm at the Coquihalla summit to near 40 centimetres at Kootenay Pass by Tuesday morning,” Environment Canada reported.
“Additionally, strong and gusty southerly winds will begin this morning and switch to strong westerly winds tonight. The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds will result in severely reduced visibilities and blowing snow conditions.”
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
The site shiftintowinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.
