The Regional District of East Kootenay is encouraging residents and visitors in the Jaffray area to use caution in and around the Tie Lake Transfer Station after a bear sighting this afternoon.

“We have had a report of a bear on site and know there have been bears in the area, so are asking users of the transfer station to be aware of their surroundings and be diligent with the way they dispose of their garbage,” said Communications Manager Loree Duczek. “All garbage must go in the bins on site, and the bin doors should be securely closed and locked before leaving. There should never been food, discarded fruit or other attractants left on the ground.”

It is the time of year when bears will be searching for food and there are many simple steps residents can take to help prevent human/wildlife conflicts. All garbage should be kept inside until the day of pick up or drop off, barbecues should be kept clean, pet food should be stored indoors, and fruit trees should be cleaned up by removing hanging and fallen fruit.

“Working together to remove attractants will reduce the likelihood of having bears become habituated to populated areas or waste transfer sties and will hopefully encourage them to keep moving and rely on natural food sources,” added Duczek.

The RDEK has posted signage at the Tie Lake Transfer Station and has notified the Conservation Officer Service.
