BelligerentĀ man breaks into Fernie home and fights with police after arrival

On May 20 at 6:04 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP attended to an address in the 600 block of 9th Avenue in Fernie for a reported break and enter in progress. The complainants report a 40-year-old white man attempting to break into the residence through a mudroom door, eventually gaining access and walking into the residence. The man was wearing no shoes or shirt.

An officer arrived on scene and was confronted by the man outside, who raised his fists in a motion to fight police. The man was placed under arrest but, during the handcuffing procedure, swung at the officer, making contact with the forehead of the arresting officer.

The arresting officer attempted to deploy a CEW (Conducted Energy Weapon) but was unsuccessful. Ā Another officer arrived on scene and observed the suspect fighting with the arresting officer and thus deployed a CEW successfully, but the suspect continued to struggle, yelling out at times ā€œI like pain!ā€ A second cycle of the CEW led to the suspect being successfully handcuffed by police, who then struggled with the suspect to place him in the patrol vehicle.

BC Ambulance attended to check on the man prior to his being lodged as per the request of the officers, but he refused care. The suspect was successfully transported to Sparwood cells without further incident. All witnesses on scene were uninjured and all cooperated with the police investigation.

The Fernie resident is currently still in cells awaiting a bail hearing with several charges recommended to Crown Counsel for approval.

It appears that other calls were made regarding this man at different locations in Fernie throughout the afternoon, mainly dealing with his being an unwanted person, but he was not located.

Anyone with information can contact the Elk Valley RCMP at 250-425-6233 to provide their information to an RCMP officer, or they can contact BC Crime Stoppers. Please refer to file 2024-1416. Our investigation is ongoing.
