Diverse Family Roots Society established
The Diverse Family Roots Society (DFRS) is a new non-profit based in the Kootenays.
DFRS is unique in the Kootenays as it is the only grassroots, parent/ family driven support network for families that have sons and/or daughters with diverse abilities that is based in The Kootenays.
“We all have a connection to the regions that we live in and beyond. We are all connected to parents and families. Our goal is to make a difference in families’ lives,” said Ben Postmus, Diverse Family Roots’ Family Navigator/ Advocate.
DFRS will strive to create connections and support, co-mentorship opportunities through facilitated connections, empowering individuals and families in the diverse ability community to live rich and full lives with the resources that they may need, Postmus explained, adding they “wish to create a world where everyone is connected to the support, to the families, to the resources, to the community in which they live.
“Providing information sharing, mentoring, opportunities to connect and share, promoting awareness and inclusion.
“See a need- fill a need. Families have never felt more isolated especially during the pandemic and to this day. Isolation is a terrible feeling, so if we can connect families to other families, a bit of that isolation is relieved,” Postmus said. “Living in the more rural parts of our province it seems that connection to services is even harder to accomplish. Often we hear, ‘I know what I want, but I don’t know who to ask.”
DFRS has a regionally diverse board. Including Chair Angie Palmer from Elkford, Secretary Lisa Gates from Krestova (Crescent Valley), Treasurer Lindsay Thompson from Tarry’s (Castlegar) and directors Lisa Lehr of Invermere and Terri McLeod of Nakusp.
Family Navigator Ben Postmus is from Fruitvale.
