Plans for Cranbrook Homeless Shelter

Cpt. Kirk Green of the Salvation Army presented plans to District of Elkford council Oct. 11 of a $16.6 million homeless shelter project in Cranbrook that would serve the entire East Kootenay.

The shelter is the project of the Cranbrook & District Community Foundation. The Salvation Army will provide the land and will own and operate the facility. The Foundation is hoping to collect $2 million locally. The remainder of the construction cost and the cost of operation will be covered by the BC Housing Association.  The Salvation Army is seeking Elkford’s financial support for the project.  Council referred the project to the 2012 budget deliberations.

BC Youth Parliament

Council approved travel expenses for Nancy Regular, Council Youth Representative, to attend the 83rd BC Youth Parliament, December 27-31, in Victoria. Youth Parliament is a province-wide organization for young people ages 16 to 21. It teaches citizenship skills through participation in the December parliamentary session and in community service activities throughout the year.

Development Variance Permit, 24 & 26 Iron Canyon Road

Council authorized the issuance of the Development Variance Permit for 24 & 26 Iron Canyon, for the temporary placement of an 84’ x 120’ fabric covered structure and for the temporary placement of a 24’ x 60’ double wide trailer.  Both structures have been placed contrary to the setback requirements of the Zoning Bylaw. The temporary buildings provide support for additional industrial activities as the owner constructs a new facility and will be removed on or before June 30, 2014.

Council Remuneration Policy

Every three years council has the opportunity to review the Policy and to establish a three-year council remuneration. Council approved a 1.5% annual increase in Council remuneration for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Community Directed Youth Funds

The District of Elkford received information regarding funding available from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) for Community Directed Youth Funds (CDYF). CDYF will commit $100,000 to communities over a four-year period specifically to enhance local opportunities and/or services targeted at youth 12-19.  The District will research this incentive to determine where the youth of Elkford would benefit from it.  The deadline for expression of interest is March 16, 2012.

Council updated the Land Held for Resale with the addition of 3 Iskut Road in the Industrial Park.
