Elkford introduces FireSmart representative

FireSmart leads the development of resources and programs to help Canadians increase resilience to wildfire, and FireSmart BC is the provincial program committed to helping British Columbians reduce their wildfire risk.

In 2019, the District of Elkford was recognized by FireSmart Canada for its proactive efforts in protecting the community from wildfire. The District of Elkford was awarded the Community Protection Achievement Certificate, highlighting our ongoing efforts toward being a resilient FireSmart community.

In alignment with these long-term efforts, as well as an increasing focus on wildfire risk reduction across B.C., we’re delighted to announce that Elkford now has our very own FireSmart Representative: Tamara Pearson!

Please join us in warmly welcoming Tamara to the District of Elkford.

Originally hailing from Salmon Arm, Tamara (pronounced Tam-AH-ra) is proud to come from a long-serving family of firefighters and emergency services personnel. Along with a passion for public education and safety, Tamara brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role with the District of Elkford, including a background in emergency management, wildland firefighting, silviculture, criminal justice and occupational health and safety management.

You may have already met Tamara while she’s been out promoting FireSmart principles across town—and she’s very excited to collaborate with Elkford’s homeowners, neighbourhoods, builders, developers, businesses, nurseries and other municipal and provincial partners to help reduce wildfire risk in and around Elkford and increase our community’s awareness and preparedness.

In her new role as FireSmart Representative for the District of Elkford, she will also be engaging in structure firefighting as a member of Elkford Fire Rescue. She’s thrilled to join such a highly skilled and dedicated team of paid-on-call firefighters, as well as to work under Chief Enzo Calla and Deputy Chief Trey Hale.

Between fighting fires, promoting FireSmart principles and striving to make Elkford more wildfire-resilient, Tamara still manages to carve out time to play and explore her new backyard! Fuelled by adventure (and a little bit of adrenaline), you can expect to find her outside camping, fishing, off-roading, paddle-boarding and hiking our amazing trail systems with her dog, Waylon.

Tamara wants to express her gratitude to Chief Calla, Deputy Chief Hale and the entire Elkford Fire Rescue team, as well as council and staff for the District of Elkford for the opportunity to work in Elkford, and the community itself for making her feel so at home. She’s looking forward to building something together and becoming united against wildfires!
