Call for volunteers for outdoor rink

The City of Fernie today, December 7, issued a call asking community members for volunteer help with the new outdoor rink that is being constructed.

The city, in partnership with the Calgary Flames Foundation, National Hockey League, Canadian Arena Products and the Fernie Lions Club, is excited to be bringing an outdoor rink to the community for the 2017-18 winter season.

The city is working with the Leisure Services Advisory Board to maintain and operate the NHL-size natural ice rink that is being built on city lands adjacent to the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the outdoor rink over the winter is asked to contact the Leisure Services Advisory Board via email at [email protected]. The group is also coordinating any community donations to the project.

“Thank you to all the community members who have already donated time, services, and money to the preparation of the site,” the city notes on its website.

Weather permitting, the rink is expected to be open to the public starting December 21.
