Community Memorial Service this Sunday
The City of Fernie is hosting a Community Memorial Service on Sunday, November 12 to honour Wayne Hornquist, Lloyd Smith and Jason Podloski.
There will be an outdoor ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m. on the east end of the soccer fields at Fernie Secondary School. The outdoor ceremony will take place around a bonfire, and will celebrate the lives of the three men killed at Fernie Memorial Arena on October 17.
The city is also taking steps to ensure media does not intrude during the ceremony – something it did regularly as the arena ammonia release tragedy unfolded.
“There will be an area designated for media at the outside ceremony. All media in attendance will be asked to stay in the designated area. A press box will be provided during the ceremony,” a city press release outlines.
“At the request of the families, media is asked not to approach any guests for interviews. The reception after the ceremony will be closed to media,” the release concluded.
