Fernie Arena and nearby homes evacuated

BREAKING

City of Fernie emergency crews, including Fernie Fire Department and BC Ambulance Service and Elk Valley RCMP, have evacuated and cordoned off the Fernie Memorial Arena this afternoon after an ammonia leak.

The City of Fernie has just reported that homes in the area are being evacuated and Emergency Social Services are being set-up at the Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre (562 3rd Avenue). Residents who live in the evacuated area are asked to check in. Red Apple, 7-Eleven, and Trinity Lodge are included in the evacuation.

The following streets surrounding the arena are closed:

9th Street from Highway 3 to 13th Avenue;

6th Ave from 9th Street to 11th Street;

11th Street between Highway 3 and 6th Ave.

Highway 3 remains open to traffic.

The public is asked to avoid the area while crews deal with the situation.

A Hazmat team from CIMCO Refrigeration is en route to Fernie to deal with the situation at the Arena.

This city this morning announced on its Facebook page: “The arena will be closed today while crews complete emergency repairs to the refrigeration plant. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

No other clear details are available at this moment. As soon as they become available, this story will be updated.
