Fernie Council Connection
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the April 10 City of Fernie council meeting.
1. REPORTS TO COUNCIL
1.1 Historic Downtown Patios – Licence of Occupation
Council approved the Licence of Occupation for nine outdoor patios in the downtown area. Patio permits will be issued for Big Bang Bagels, Fernie Hotel, Infinitea, Lunch Box, Nevados Restaurant, the Brick House, Loaf Bakery, the Northern and Valley Social Company. The term of licence is for a three-year period. Changes in 2017 to the policy limit patios to 28.0m per block face on an avenue and 14.0m on a street. Patios are permitted from May 1 to October 15 each year and cannot operate between 10 p.m and 7 a.m.
1.2 Reconsideration Motion 2017 Capital Works Program
Council approved a motion to adopt a 6m road cross section for 1st Avenue (14th St and 15th St) Capital Works project brought forward for reconsideration from the March 27 regular meeting. Project consultant ISL Engineering and Land Services was in attendance to respond to questions regarding traffic flows, safety, construction and maintenance costs and application of Municipal Master Construction Document standards.
2. OTHER INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
2.1 Youth Action Network
Youth Action Network (YAN) is kicking off the Fernie program for youth aged 12-18 years with an opinion survey to find out what activities Fernie youth are interested in. Survey is open to Fernie youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years and Grade 6 students and closes April 26.
2.2 Flood Mitigation Funding
The City of Fernie received $150,000 of funding from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for Non-Structural Flood Mitigation covering risk assessment, flood mapping and mitigation planning.
2.3 National Day of Mourning
Every year city staff and council observe the National Day of Mourning. On April 28 we will again pay respects to workers who have lost their lives or been injured in work related incidents. By working together, employers and workers, can prevent the number of injuries and deaths each year.
2.4 School Zone Safety
The City of Fernie would like to remind drivers of the importance of driving and parking safely in school zones. To help make our streets safer for our children, we ask drivers to please be courteous and park responsibly when dropping off or picking up children from school.
2.5 Canada Day Celebrations

2.6 Fernie Memorial Arena Hall of Fame
Do you know someone who has made a significant contribution to qualify of life in Fernie by promoting sports and recreation participation at the Fernie Memorial Arena? Nominate this person for the Fernie Memorial Hall of Fame.
2.7 Rail Safety Week
Canadian Pacific Rail Safety Week happens April 24 through April 30. The public is reminded to take care around railway properties. Rail safety requires vigilance 365 days a year and incidents can have significant impacts on our community.
2.8 Short Term Rentals Public Survey
The City of Fernie is evaluating how to manage short-term rentals in our community. This is a complex issue. With the help of a citizen task force, we have put together a survey to gather your insight and opinions on short-term rentals in Fernie. The survey will close on April 27.
2.9 Affordable Housing in Fernie
How does Fernie’s current housing situation affect you? Our current Affordable Housing Strategy was developed in 2007 and has become outdated. You can get involved. Take the survey before April 20.
2.10 Fernie Hosts Hard Powder starring Liam Neeson
Residents will notice a lot going on in downtown Fernie this week with filming crews for the movie Hard Powder on location. During this closed set filming there will be some traffic and parking disruptions in certain areas.
2.11 Earth Day April 22
This Earth Day, gather with your community for an Environmental & Climate Literacy Teach-In or another project focused on education. Wildsight has a line up of great events taking place for all ages.
