Fernie Freestyle athletes soared high at Panorama
After nearly two years without competition, Fernie Freestyle Club athletes haven’t skipped a beat, with 20 athletes attending the BC Freestyle Provincial Competition this past week, January 14-16, at Panorama Mountain Resort, landing 17 podium finishes.
Athletes competed in three events over the competition in Moguls, Slope and Big Air. Fernie Freestyle athletes brought home medals in all three disciplines.
Program Director/Head Coach Chris Ebbern said, “It was an extremely successful weekend of learning and competing after almost two years of not being in the start gate. For most of our athletes, it was their first freestyle competition and first Timber Tour/Provincial Comp. I am very proud of everyone that attended and can’t wait to get to the next stop in February at Sun Peaks Resort.”
We had many podiums over the weekend with highlights on the Timber Tour, with Griffin Paterson placing first in the M16 Moguls and second overall and Yohan Simpson taking the top spot in M14 Big Air.
Fernie’s Nyah Shopland finished second in the W14 Big Air and third in the Slope. Charlie Weyman finished third in W14 Moguls.
In the Super Youth category, it was a triple podium finish for Fernie athletes in both Moguls and Big Air in the M12 age group, with Theo Favreau finishing first, Jake Weyman second, and Ben Dryborough third in both respective events.
In the M12 Slope event, Theo Favreau again finished first and Ben Dryborough finished third.
Fernie Freestyle Club would like to thank BC Freestyle and Panorama Mountain Resort for putting together a well-organized and safe event during these challenging times.
Next up on the tour for Club Athletes is Sun Peaks from Feb. 10-13, 2022, followed by BC Champs in Whistler on April 7-10.
