Fernie, please lock and secure your vehicles
Overnight on May 16 the Annex neighbourhood of Fernie was targeted by unknown people.
An unlocked van with keys inside was stolen and a variety of items were stolen from four unlocked vehicles. Among the items stolen were identity documents and tools. These thefts are troubling as they were all preventable.
Keep vehicles locked at all times and do not leave keys inside, even hidden keys can be found. All identity documents, such as drivers licences, passports, birth certificates, immigration cards, are potentially very valuable and should never be left in unattended vehicles.
The theft of these documents could lead to one’s identity being stolen and used for fraudulent purposes and results in additional difficulties for the victim.
Elk Valley RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a grey 2007 Chevrolet 15 passenger van with #17 in black letters on the side and B.C. licence plate 978 2GY.
If it is located, please call the police immediately.
âIt is important for Fernie residents to keep their vehicles locked and not to leave keys inside vehicles,â said Cpl. Dan Hay of Elk Valley RCMP.
âWhile we all appreciate the âsmall townâ atmosphere of Fernie, it also attracts more thieves than other Elk Valley communities and the âsmall townâ does not prevent these easily preventable thefts from happening.â
If you have experienced a similar theft in Fernie, or else where, and have yet to report it to police, please call the Elk Valley RCMP Detachment’s Fernie office at 250-423-4404.
