Fernie promptly responds to hateful vandalism
One month ago the City of Fernie and School District No. 5 celebrated the opening of the first Rainbow Crosswalk.
It was a symbolic gesture of inclusion and acceptance of all people, noted City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano.
On Canada Day, as the community celebrated our nation’s 150th birthday – a nation that has been built on the concepts of inclusion, fairness and togetherness – city officials and residents scrambled to wipe away obscene spray paint vandalism on the crosswalk.
“Someone spray painted gross obscenities; however, public works, fire department, council members and the public gathered quickly and painted over it within a couple of hours, showing great support for what the crosswalks represent and the value of the meaning. Very proud of this community,” Mayor Giuliano told e-KNOW.
