Fernie Water Quality Advisory rescinded
Effective immediately, the City of Fernie has rescinded the Water Quality Advisory issued April 12, 2023.
Current testing indicates the water quality is βGOODβ at the Fairy Creek Source with turbidity levels less than 1 NTU.
Please visit the Cityβs website fernie.ca for current turbidity ratings, or email operations@fernie.ca to be added to the Water Quality Advisory list.
Original story
The City of Fernie has completed repairs to the Fairy Creek water source; however, water sampling results received this morning (April 14) show selenium concentrations in the James White Wells beyond the 10 microgram per litre standard set by the BC Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.
The Water Quality Advisory issued on April 12, will remain in effect until turbidity drops below 1 NTU at Fairy Creek or selenium levels in the James White Wells are within safe drinking water standards, the city said.
βWhile health risks are considered low, the City of Fernie and Interior Health recommend that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice. For these at-risk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute,β the city advised.
βThe City of Fernie is taking additional steps to reduce risk. Interior Health has been fully involved, and the public will be notified when conditions change, or water quality has improved.β
