Garbage collection schedule changing in Fernie

As part of the City of Fernie’s new curbside organics collection program, the frequency of garbage collection is transitioning to every other week starting in December and with that comes other shifts to collection days.

Organics Collection will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week.

Area 1 will be collected on Tuesdays, and Area 2 is picked up on Wednesdays (hot tip: your previous garbage day is your new organics day).

Garbage collection will occur on Thursdays, with Area 1 having their first bi-weekly collection date on December 5 and Area 2 on December 12.

Recycling collection will continue as a bi-weekly service on Fridays.

Bi-weekly garbage collection encourages use of the organics and recycling carts – diverting more waste and allowing us to continue using the existing RDEK landfill for longer, make soil instead of trash AND lower our greenhouse gas emissions. win-win!

Thanks to everyone who has been using their green bins, if you’re still getting into the swing of things and need a refresher on what goes in which bin, visit fernie.ca/organics.

You’ll also find the collection schedule there – or you can stop by City Hall for a handy magnet!
