Ghostriders hire new head coach and GM

The Fernie Ghostriders Junior A Hockey Club are pleased to announce that they have hired Chad Scharff as their new head coach and general manager.

“Scharff comes to the Ghostriders with a great deal of elite hockey coaching experience, being involved with both Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada,” said Ghostriders president Barb Anderson. “He has also worked for the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Giants.”

This past season, Scharff was the head coach of the Airdrie CFR Bisons U18AAA team. Scharff, who and was a scout for the Giants from 2021-23, guided the Bisons to second-place in the South Division of the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) U18AAA level.

The season before, Scharff was head coach of the Calgary Northstars in the AEHL U18AAA and an assistant coach of the Northstars U17AAA program.

Scharff played for the Giants from 2002-07 and won a Memorial Cup with the Giants. He was the recipient of their Humanitarian Award. Scharff, along with his wife Tracy and their two daughters Brooklyn and Kennedy, will be making Fernie their home.

“Welcome to the Fernie Ghostriders family! We are excited to get our season started,” said Anderson.

The Ghostriders would like to thank Ty Valin for all his hard work over the past three seasons. Ty worked hard to build our team, which led to a Teck Cup Final last season. We wish Ty and his family all the best in his future endeavours.
