Local student secures place in international hockey tourney

Fernie Academy student Dryden Hanson has been selected to compete for the U14 Cranbrook Bucks, sponsored by the Fernie Fox Hotel, at an upcoming international ice hockey tournament. Taking place in December, the U14 Cranbrook Bucks will represent Canada as one of 48 teams competing in the Göteborg Ishockey Cup (Gothenburg Ice Hockey Cup).

Dryden, 13, will be joined by teammates Zachary Auger and Nixon McDonald at the tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden. The trio played for the Cranbrook Bucks’ U13 team this season, which won the U13 BC Hockey Championships in Prince George last month.

The team contacted local businesses to support players by sponsoring one or all of their tournament jerseys. The Fernie Fox Hotel, which has a history of supporting people, employees and initiatives in the community, has contributed $1,200 for Dryden’s three jerseys.

Fernie Fox Hotel co-owner Marina Pauw said, “We are thrilled to sponsor Dryden, who has worked hard to secure his place in the tournament team. At the Fernie Fox Hotel, we actively seek opportunities to support Fernie people, causes and non-profits that are doing a good thing.”

Krista Hanson, Dryden’s mom commented: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Dryden and his teammates to compete in an international tournament and Dryden is incredibly grateful and excited to represent the Fernie Fox at the competition.”

Invitations went out to teams from all over the world, including Canada, the USA, and countries in Europe. The Fernie Fox Hotel has supported the Fernie Junior Ghostriders Hockey Club and has made a number of other donations to the Fernie Dog Park, the Elk Valley Hospital and other youth sports groups.
