MP inviting constituents to Small Business Forum
On October 12, Fernie and area business owners will have the opportunity to share their ideas on how government can better support small businesses in the region at the Fernie Small Business Forum.
“Small businesses are the drivers of our local economies, they support our families, and they make our communities vibrant. Governments need to recognize and support that,” said Kootenay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski. “During the election I made a commitment to small business owners that I would work together with all levels of government towards improving the business climate in our region. This forum is the first step toward fulfilling that commitment.”
Stetski will head a panel that features elected officials from all levels of government including Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons (NDP) and City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano.
Fernie Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Patty Vadnais agrees on the importance of small business to the area. “Small businesses are defined as having 99 or fewer employees, which is the majority of our membership. It’s important for government to understand the unique needs these businesses have, but also the unique opportunities they provide. We encourage small business owners to participate and provide their input.”
Stetski added, “We know small businesses face a huge range of challenges. The federal government’s decision to keep the small business tax at 11% instead of reducing it to nine per cent as promised will cost small businesses across the country $2.2 billion dollars over the next four years. It is very important for policy makers to hear how their decisions affect the day to day operations of the businesses that our communities rely on.”
Stetski is inviting all small businesses owners in Fernie, the Elk Valley and throughout the East Kootenay to join him at the forum, which is taking place at the Fernie Seniors Hall on October 12 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
Please RSVP by emailing [email protected] or by contacting Wayne Stetski’s office at 250-417-2250.
