Kikomun Wildfire now being held

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has provided an update on the Kikomun Wildfire situated west of Baynes Lake with information from BC Wildfire Service.

The fire is now classified as ‘Being Held’ at 8.45 hectares but the Evacuation Order for 14 properties and Alert for 38 properties remain in effect at this time.

Fire behaviour has decreased overnight and is now displaying rank 1 behaviour with pockets of rank 2. This means it’s a smouldering ground fire with areas of low vigour surface fire.

The wildfire is currently being actioned by 25 BC Wildfire Service personnel who are working alongside members of the Jaffray, Elko, and Baynes Lake Fire Departments.

The wildfire has been wrapped in hose-lay and water is being used for fire suppression efforts.

Fire conditions are currently being evaluated and the RDEK will provide an update if and when there is any news to report on that front.

BC Wildfire Service reports the fire discovered yesterday is human-caused.

“A huge thank you again to all the firefighters and air crews for their incredible efforts yesterday,” the RDEK stated in conclusion of its update.
