Lost snowmobilers rescued in Flathead
Fernie Search and Rescue was activated last night to locate two snowmobilers who had become disorientated in the Flathead and were unsure of the way back to their vehicles.
Also, due to the amount of recent snow the conditions for snowmobiling were very difficult and the snowmobilers were exhausted from digging their machines out in an effort to get back, Fernie SAR reported on its Facebook page.
“When they realized their predicament the snowmobilers made the correct decision to call for help, stay where they were and light a fire to stay warm until assistance arrived. The snowmobilers were also equipped with a GPS and a satellite phone and were able to provide their exact location,” SAR related.
Due to the challenging snowmobiling conditions Fernie SAR took the decision to involve members of the Fernie Snowmobile Association for their experience of travelling in the conditions and local knowledge of the area the lost snowmobilers were in.
The lost snowmobilers were located around 11 p.m. last night uninjured and were able to be led back to their vehicles using their own machines.
Fernie SAR would like to thank the members of Fernie Snowmobile Association and Avalanche Canada for their assistance with this rescue without whom the lost snowmobilers would likely have had to spend the night in the backcountry. #bcsara #inreach
