Police report increase in fraudulent activity
Elk Valley RCMP is advising residents that there has been an increase in the number of frauds reported to police in the past weeks.
These reports have included incidents of the so-called ‘Grandparent Scam,’ in which a fraudster (pretending to be a police officer) contacts an individual and request bail money for a family member – typically a grandson, said Sgt. Brad Gregory.
Another fraud that has been reported locally is the ‘Telus Scam,’ in which scammers pretend to be a representative from Telus and the aim is to obtain personal information from the victim, such as driver’s license data, Telus account numbers, and online log-in information, he added.
Elk Valley RCMP is urging residents to use extra caution when receiving unsolicited phone calls from anyone, and to not send cash, e-transfers, or pre-paid gift cards to anyone unless they know the person.
Frauds should be reported to the RCMP, as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
