Rainfall warning for Elk Valley
Environment Canada has this morning issued a rainfall warning for the Elk Valley.
Heavy rain is expected this evening through Thursday with a total rainfall amount up to 55 mm.
Environment Canada warns about water pooling and localized flooding, along with poor visibility due to heavy rain, with heavy snow over higher terrain.
Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass, as well as Trans-Canada Highway – Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass and Coquihalla Highway – Hope to Merritt for today into Thursday, with heavy snow, gusty winds and reduced visibilities.
“A cold front will bring heavy rain to the Elk Valley tonight and Thursday. Heaviest amounts are expected in the south including Fernie and Morrissey. Snow will transition to rain throughout the afternoon. Rain will intensify this evening and persist through Thursday,” Environment Canada said.
“The rain falling on top of the snow already on the ground will exacerbate water pooling and localized flooding risks. The snow level will reside between 1,100 and 1,300 metres from this afternoon to Thursday evening. Heavy snow is expected above this level.
“Heavy rain will ease to showers on Thursday evening in the wake of the cold front. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Be prepared for winter conditions at higher elevations.”
