Response continues to fuel spill in Jaffray

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) has taken over the investigation into a fuel spill at a service station in Jaffray.

MOE was immediately engaged by the Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) firefighters who responded to the initial call yesterday morning.  Environmental response contractors arrived late yesterday and have been on site through today (Feb. 12). In addition, a Spill Response Officer was dispatched this afternoon to further assess the scene.

MOE has now confirmed approximately 12,000 litres of diesel fuel escaped during the incident and work continues to determine the extent of the spill and whether there are any impacts to nearby wells.

“We are aware of the community’s concern regarding the potential impact on its drinking water. As the investigation into the spill is still underway, residents in the area may choose to use an alternative source for drinking water until the full scope of the incident has been determined,” said RDEK Electoral Area B Director Stan Doehle.

“I want to thank our Jaffray and Elko firefighters for their quick response to the call.  Although the MOE and Interior Health are the lead agencies, our team will continue to work with them to share information with the community as it becomes available,” added Doehle.
