Small grass fires in South Country quickly contained

Members of the Jaffray, Baynes Lake and Elko Fire Departments are on the scene of two small grass fire this afternoon in the Jaffray area.

“In spite of the recent cooler temperatures, our fine fuels and the materials on the forest floor are extremely dry,” explained Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Chief Michael Hockley.

“We take every grass fire call extremely seriously as we know how quickly fire behaviour can change given current conditions. Our firefighters did an excellent job once again today.”

Currently there are 12 firefighters from the three departments along with eight pieces of apparatus on site. The fires have been fully extinguished and the firefighters are doing final mop up on both locations.

The two small fires were approximately 400 metres apart and were located in a ditch line along Onda Road near Sand Creek.

The cause of the fires is under investigation.
