Snowfall warning for Elk Valley

Environment Canada is warning about the potential for heavy snowfall in the Elk Valley on Saturday (Dec. 18).

Snowfall between 10 to 20 cm is anticipated, with higher amounts expected near Fernie and Morrissey through to Saturday night.

Near-zero visibility will be possible from blowing snow due to strong winds, Environment Canada noted.

“A Pacific frontal system will be crossing the B.C. Interior. Snow from the system will begin Saturday morning and will intensify throughout the day. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 20 cm can be expected before the snow tapers off to a few flurries Saturday overnight. Sparwood is expected to receive lesser amounts.”

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting this afternoon noted the Elk Valley could receive 30 cm or more of snow, while the rest of the region will also receive the white stuff, but not as much.

“Cranbrook and Kimberley are forecasted to receive accumulations of up to five cm, whereas the Yahk area is expected to see up to 15 cm,” Mainroad forecasted.

“Invermere is forecasted to receive up to seven cm of snow. Panorama is expected to see up to 10 cm of accumulation. The weather system will move into the Columbia Valley region early Saturday morning, then begin to taper off Sunday morning.”
