Hand ignitions coming in Lladnar Creek battle

The Lladnar Creek Wildfire close to Sparwood remains out-of-control at 308 hectares today (July 26).

BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) crews will be looking for opportunities to conduct small-scale hand ignitions to remove unburnt fuel between the fire edge and control lines in an intentional manner to reduce the chance of the fire spreading beyond control lines.

These small-planned ignitions may begin Wednesday if conditions are favourable. Hand ignitions will be ongoing in the coming days when conditions allow, BCWS explained. Learn more about planned ignitions here.

Wednesday is forecast to be sunny, warm and dry with variable, but generally light, winds. On Thursday, there is potential for thunderstorms bringing dry lighting and gusting winds. The fire is a smouldering ground fire (rank 1 and 2) with pockets of rank 3 in areas of heavy fuel accumulation. Learn more about wildfire rank. On Wednesday, heavy equipment and firefighters are putting in machine guard along the BC Hydro right-of-way at the bottom of the slope. Crews are preparing water-delivery systems and establishing hoselay in critical areas, BCWS said.

Structure protection personnel are on site, assessing and installing equipment to protect structures as needed.

“Aircraft are assisting ground crews on Wednesday as needed to cool the fire’s edge and slow growth downslope. The fire has moved further downslope and heavy equipment and firefighters are constructing machine guard and wetline to help prevent spread toward the community. Helicopters will bolster those efforts where it is safe and effective to do so.”

The District of Sparwood has issued an evacuation ALERT due to this wildfire. For the latest information on evacuation alerts and orders, visit the District of Sparwood website.
