Local stopped after driving 171 km/h on Highway 3
On August 13 at 5:44 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP was completing static laser work as part of traffic enforcement initiatives in the Hosmer area along Highway 3 near Fernie when the officer observed a blue compact Mini Cooper with a B.C. licence plate travelling at a high rate of speed, estimated to be over 160 km/hr.
The officer indicated the vehicle was travelling so fast he was unable to confirm speed on approach to his location with the laser but was able to mark the vehicle after it passed his static location.
The speed limit in that location is 100 km/hr, but the vehicle was travelling at 171 km/hr toward Sparwood. The officer was able to safely get behind the vehicle due to other traffic holding the vehicle up and the car pulled over near the Sparwood Transfer Station.
“When asked why he was travelling so fast, the Sparwood resident indicated he had picked up cat food in Fernie and was ‘trying to get ahead of the crazy drivers,’” reported S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.
The driver was served an excessive speeding ticket for travelling over 60 km/h above the speed limit and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
“The man was also given a ride home. Our investigation is concluded,” S/Sgt Nielsen said.
