RCMP seek person of interest in Sparwood shooting death
The BC RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit (SED MCU) is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the following male, who is a person of interest in a shooting death of Joel Zimbalatti, which occurred in Sparwood on October 11.
On October 11, at 3:16 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP received a report of a shooting at a trailer located in the 6200 block of Lower Elk Valley Road, Sparwood.
Upon arrival, police arrested one male outside of the trailer and a search of the trailer located Mr. Zimbalatti deceased inside.
The arrested male was later released from custody without charge as the investigation continued. At the onset of this investigation, the death of Mr. Zimbalatti was deemed suspicious and SED MCU was called in to take conduct of the investigation.
The initial investigation has determined that, in addition to the male who was arrested at the scene, a second male, who goes by the alias “Slim,” was also present when the shooting occurred and immediately departed the scene prior to police arrival, the SED MCU revealed today (Oct. 25).
“Slim is believed to be one of the last people to see Mr. Zimbalatti alive, before he was shot and it is imperative that investigators speak with Slim regarding this investigation,” said Inspector Brent Novakoski, District Senior Investigating Officer, SED MCU.
Slim was last seen in the Kimberley area on the day after the shooting, but is known to have ties to the Okanagan area of B.C.
Slim is described as:
Caucasian male;
20-25 years old;
Tall;
Skinny;
Hair – Black;
Noticeable side burns which are trimmed narrow.
Last seen wearing the same clothing in the attached photograph.
“If Slim sees or hears this call for information, we ask him to contact the police of jurisdiction,” said Insp. Novakoski.
Should you encounter Slim do not approach him and immediately call 9-1-1. Should you have information regarding the identity of Slim please call the BC RCMP SED MCU information line at 1-877-987-8477.
