SDFWA this year’s Golden Shovel Award winner

Big congrats to this year’s Golden Shovel Award winner – Sparwood and District Fish and Wildlife Association (SDFWA).

The East Kootenay Invasive Species Council and SDFWA first partnered in 2019 to enhance the Elk Valley ecosystem, a crucial habitat for Bighorn sheep. Invasive species had encroached on this area, requiring immediate restoration.

With dedication from Matt Huryn and the SDFWA, they secured a five-year Ecosystem Enhancement Grant from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) for the Big Ranch Property and Elk Valley.

Now in the fifth year, they have conducted significant land enhancements, including wetland restoration, tree thinning, and invasive plant management.

EKISC and SDFWA developed the Elk Valley Invasive Plant Management Plan, integrating it with SDFWA’s projects and reducing invasive plants in critical winter habitats.

SDFWA has presented their work at various events, emphasizing invasive plant management and their partnership with EKISC. In recognition of their achievements, EKISC is awarding SDFWA the prestigious Golden Shovel Award for their dedication to preserving the Elk Valley’s natural habitats and combating invasive species. This award highlights the impact of SDFWA’s efforts in environmental conservation.
