Sparwood asks province to lift orders around municipal facilities

The District of Sparwood is asking the provincial government to lift all mandatory orders related to municipal-run facilities except for mandatory masks, where required.

The district today forwarded a letter, signed by Mayor David Wilks, to Premier John Horgan stating: ā€œBased on vaccination rates we believe that herd immunity has been reached and for the physical and mental health of our residents it is time to allow everyone to use taxpayer funded facilities.ā€

Wilks noted some of the orders levied against municipalities havenā€™t ā€œmade much senseā€ and offered some examples.

ā€œUnder the current order a person either vaccinated or unvaccinated can participate in an indoor public skate. This requires the unvaccinated person to enter a building that they are not allowed to enter if they are going to watch an organized event,ā€ he said.

ā€œMost recreation facilities have a concession within the building. The concession in Sparwood has been designated as a fast-food outlet, therefore both vaccinated and unvaccinated people are allowed to enter the building, order food, sit down within the concourse, and consume their food,ā€ Wilks said.

Additionally, he pointed out ā€œa person vaccinated or unvaccinated is allowed to attend a council meeting and no proof of vaccination is required for local government business.ā€
