Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the March 1 District of Sparwood council meeting.

DELEGATIONS

RCMP Quarterly Report

Cpl. Dan Hay of the Elk Valley Regional RCMP, presented the quarterly crime statistics from July to December 2021.

BYLAWS

Mobile Home Definition Amendment Bylaw

Mobile Home Definition Amendment Bylaw No. 1291, 2021 was adopted. This bylaw contains amendments to the Zoning and Mobile Home Parks Bylaws which will allow for homes built to the CSA A277 Standard to be located in Mobile Home Parks within the district where currently only homes built to the CSA Z240 Standard are permitted.

BUSINESS

Sunset Ridge Ski Society

Council approved the allocation of $3,000 from the Community Funding & Support Program to the Sunset Ridge Ski Society at the February 22 special meeting. This funding will be used to support the fundraising campaign for the purchase and storage of grooming equipment.

400 Evergreen Crescent

Council approved the execution of a revised lease with the Elk Valley Family Society for the lands at 400 Evergreen Crescent. The changes to the lease allow for the BC Housing Management Commission to step in and take over the affordable housing project should some sort of default occur.

District Parade Float

At the Committee-of-the-Whole portion of the meeting council engaged in discussion regarding the District Parade Float.

The current float has been in operation for approximately 20 years and is due for an update. Our current policy allows the opportunity for a volunteer to apply and attend a parade on behalf of the district, and/or take the float to a parade within a 200 km radius of Sparwood.

Council provided the following direction:

  • Explore a float that will utilize a single fleet vehicle;
  • Can be assembled by one person;
  • Include elements from the existing float;
  • Mining related theme including the Titan Truck.

SCEEMP Three-Year Update

Council endorsed the Socio-Community and Economic Effects Management Plan (SCEEMP) Three-Year Update. The plan was originally developed through collaboration between Teck and the District of Sparwood in 2019. The development of the SCEEMP was required as a condition of the Environmental Assessment Certificate issued for the Baldy Ridge Expansion at Elkview Operations. The SCEEMP will now be submitted to the province and the SocioCommunity and Economic Effects Advisory Committee (SCEEAC) will work with the updated plan.
