Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the April 4 District of Sparwood council meeting.

DELEGATION

Coal Miner Days

Marcia Johnson and Kate Martin, representing the Coal Miner Days committee, presented plans for the 2023 Coal Miner Days. Residents are encouraged to follow their Facebook page for up-to-date events and announcements.

BUSINESS

Community Funding Requests

There were two Category 2 Community Funding requests brought forward to the meeting. The first request was from the Elk Valley Thrift Shop (pictured above) to aid with the cost of their 2023 utilities and the second from the Frank J Mitchell Parent Advisory Committee to help support a new playground. Both requests were approved for $3,000 each.

Development Variance Permit Request

Council has authorized staff to issue notice to affected properties of Spardell Mobile Home Park Unit H11’s request to decrease the minimum side yard setback from 1.52m to 0.6m to allow for a proposed shed. There will be an Informal Public Hearing scheduled to gather public feedback, which will then be discussed at the following regular council meeting.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Secondary Upgrades

Council approved staff to execute an engineering consulting services contract with AECOM Canada Ltd for a total estimated cost of $788,014 plus applicable taxes. This phase of the wastewater plant upgrades will include the removal of the oxidation ditch and replacing the secondary treatment with sequencing batch reactors that will provide an increased treatment capacity.

COMMITTEE-OF-THE-WHOLE

Minor Development Variance Permit Delegation

The committee was presented with a new delegation bylaw to delegate minor development variance permit powers to staff. The proposed bylaw laid out the parameters of what minor is for each area. Staff were given directive to bring the bylaw back to council for readings. For more information

Regional Economic Development Service Exploration

The Director of Planning and Development presented the committee with a plan developed by the Elk Valley Economic Initiative to create a Regional Economic Development Officer role to aid with Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, and Area A economic development. After discussion, the Committee agreed to provide a letter of support to the Regional District of East Kootenay to explore this service.

Town Hall Meeting – Wednesday, May 3 at Seniors’ Drop-In Centre (101 4th Ave) at 6 p.m.
