Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Sept. 3 District of Sparwood council meeting.

INFORMAL PUBLIC HEARINGS

Development Variance Permit for #27-9555 Highway 43

An Informal Public Hearing was held to hear community feedback regarding a development variance permit for 27-9555 Highway 43 to vary Section 4.9.2.d of the Sparwood Mobile Home Parks Bylaw No. 288, 1982, as amended, to decrease the minimum building and structure rear yard from 4.57m to 1.52m to place a new mobile home. The development variance permit was later issued by council at the regular meeting.

Development Variance Permit for 454 Mountain Ash Crescent

An Informal Public Hearing was held to hear community feedback regarding a development variance permit for 454 Mountain Ash Crescent to vary Section 3.2.2.C.i and 3.2.2.D.i of Zoning Bylaw 264, 1981, as amended, to decrease the minimum building and structure side and rear yards from 1.52m to 1.02m to renovate a detached garage. The development variance permit was later issued by council at the regular meeting.

Development Variance Permit for 1500 Sparwood Heights Drive

An Informal Public Hearing was held to hear community feedback regarding a development variance permit for 1500 Sparwood Heights Drive (Westwood Heights) to vary the requirements of the District’s Subdivision Servicing Bylaw regarding road, sidewalk, storm, lighting, and fibre-optic conduit design as well as the district’s Signage Bylaw regarding offsite signage related to a 21 lot subdivision. The development variance permit was later issued by council at the regular meeting.

BUSINESS

Community Funding and Support Request – Madelyn Smith

Council approved a community funding and support Category 2 request of $1,102.40 for Madelyn Smith to purchase topsoil for the Lilac Terrace garden boxes. There is now $1,140.82 of funding remaining for 2024 requests.

Lease Notices

Council has authorized staff to post notice for the following leases:

Sparwood Weight Training Club – five-year lease at 367 Pine Avenue (known as the Weight Training Facility) at a total value of $114,893.84.

Sparwood Curling Club five-year lease at 367 Pine Avenue (known the Curling Rink, Curling Concourse, Curling Lounge) at a total value of $68,792.60.

After Public Notice has been advertised, the leases will be brought to council for their consideration in October.

UNSIGHTLY PROPERTIES

The District of Sparwood will be focusing on unsightly properties as part of its bylaw education and enforcement program. Properties that have derelict vehicles, accumulations of garbage, old furniture and machinery, uncut grass and (noxious) weeds, vegetation which interferes with the visibility of street signs, sidewalks and public utilities will be investigated upon receipt of a complaint or through proactive enforcement. SPARWOOD COMPOST AREAS

Residents are reminded that the compost sites located in lower Sparwood, near the Fire Hall at the end of Engelmann Spruce Drive, and in Sparwood Heights, next to the ball fields are for the disposal of grass, leaves, and sod ONLY. PLEASE DO NOT DISPOSE of fruits, vegetables, any food waste, household garbage, recyclables, branches, or trees. These items should be taken to the Transfer Station where they are accepted free of charge.
