Sparwood Council Facts
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the April 15 District of Sparwood council meeting.
BYLAWS
Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 1347, 2025 – 620 Douglas Fir Road
Council adopted the zoning amendment bylaw to change the zoning of 620 Douglas Fir Road from Highway Commercial (C-2) to Light Industrial (M-1). The application submitted by East Kootenay Pilot Service Ltd. was to permit the business at this location. This bylaw was given first and second reading February 18. A Public Hearing was held and third reading given on March 18.
BUSINESS
2024 Draft Financial Statements
Council accepted the 2024 Financial Statements as presented by BDO Canada LLP. In accordance with the Community Charter Section 167(1), Council is required to accept the annual audited financial statements. The auditor signed off on the audit report and presented to Council in accordance with Section 171(1) of the Community Charter. The next step is for Finance to send them to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs by May 15, 2025.
Visitor Information Centre Lease
The current lease with the Sparwood and District Chamber of Commerce for the Visitor Information Centre expired on June 30, 2022. However, terms and conditions of that agreement have remained status-quo as neither party provided notice to terminate the agreement. The lease was provided at no cost in exchange for maintaining the building and grounds and providing visitor information services, a function which the District of Sparwood also provides annual funding for in addition to the lease. Council directed staff to post notice of council’s intention to consider the five-year lease to the Sparwood and District Chamber of Commerce at a rate of $10 per year.
Development Variance Permit for 1302 Wildwood Drive (DVP2025-001)
Council authorized staff to issue notice to affected properties of its intent to consider development variance permit, DVP2025-001, to vary requirements of the district’s Zoning Bylaw No. 264, 1981 as amended, to increase the allowable accessory building site coverage and increase the maximum accessory building height, to construct a detached garage at 1302 Wildwood Drive.
An informal hearing will be scheduled to hear from the public prior to consideration.

Wednesday, May 14 – Socio-Community & Economic Effects Advisory Committee.
All meetings are held at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Municipal Office (136 Spruce Avenue), unless otherwise noted.
