Sparwood Food Bank relocates to new home

The Sparwood Food Bank is excited to announce its relocation to a new facility at 114 Centennial Street, Sparwood, on April 1, 2024. This move marks a significant milestone in the mission to combat food insecurity and better serve the community.

Deepest gratitude to Columbia Basin Trust for their generous donation of $180,000, and Elk Valley Resources (EVR) for their substantial contribution of $100,000. These donations were instrumental in securing the new location and enhancing the services.

Numerous other community supporters have contributed to the success through donations and support during this transition. These include:

“Our new home has provided us with the space and resources necessary to continue our operations and serve the community more effectively,” said Tracey Brook-Baker, Treasurer at Sparwood Food Bank. “The support we have received from Columbia Basin Trust, EVR, and so many other community members is a testament to the strength and generosity of our town.”

The Sparwood Food Bank operates 364 days a year, providing essential food support to approximately 50 families monthly. In addition to the core services, the Sparwood Food Share program extends aid to seniors, local churches, and schools, ensuring that food reaches those in need throughout the community.

The operations are made possible through the dedication of the staff and the invaluable contributions of volunteers, who collectively contribute about 80 volunteer hours each month.

“We are proud to support the Sparwood Food Bank in their efforts to address food insecurity in the community,” said Mike Carrucan, CEO, EVR. “EVR is focused on investing in organizations that strengthen the communities where we operate and we commend the Sparwood Food Bank for their dedication to helping those in need.”

“There is a bright future ahead for the Sparwood Food Bank. This new building isn’t just four walls, it’s a testament to community dedication and generosity. The increased space will create more efficient storage and distribution of essentials to the community,” said Will Nixon, Director, Delivery of Benefits & Special Initiatives, Columbia Basin Trust.

“Thanks to the unwavering support of Sparwood’s residents and businesses, and congratulations to the Sparwood Food Bank on this move. Together, we’re making a difference, one meal at a time.”

The Sparwood Food Bank looks forward to continuing the partnership with local businesses, organizations, and volunteers to work together to ensure no one in the community goes hungry.
