Sparwood Mayor praises residents for remaining calm

Mayor David Wilks

Mayor David Wilks and council for the District of Sparwood provided an update on the Lladnar Creek Wildfire that has forced an evacuation alert.

You will see heavy machinery working on the BC Hydro road above Sparwood Heights and extending all the way past the old Finning building. Wildfire BC is establishing a fire break in this area. Please stay out of that area.

You will see a heavier presence of BC Wildfire Service firefighters in Sparwood starting today. They are experts in the field of forest fires. Give them room to do their job. If you see them around town thank them for the work they are doing.

You will see helicopters flying around today. Again Wildfire BC is the lead on forest fires and they will determine what is needed and what is safe to do.

The District of Sparwood will continue to ensure we provide as much accurate information as we can in a timely manner. Staff and employees are doing a great job and we thank them.

The Sparwood Fire Department continues to ensure our town remains safe and is in an assist role should BC Wildfire require additional person power.

I would like to remind people that the role of our fire department is far different than that of BC Wildfire. They are both working exceptionally hard to ensure the safety of residents in Sparwood.

Mayor and council would like to thank all residents of Sparwood for their understanding during this very stressful time.

The best thing you can do is be prepared by ensuring you have personal documents and other items in a bag ready to go should you need to leave town.

Please stay calm and if you have any questions I can be reached on Facebook or on my cell phone 250-433-6921 (text is best) or email at [email protected]

Again, you are all doing awesome by staying calm.

Mayor David Wilks,

District of Sparwood
