Sparwood prepares to fire up electronic sign

A new electronic sign will soon be launched as a central communication tool for the District of Sparwood.

Mayor David Wilks

The sign, reaching over 15 feet tall, will be located on the boulevard of Aspen Drive next to Subway and A&W Restaurants.

Born from a need to replace the electronic sign that once hung on the Red Cedar Drive Arch, and council’s desire to enhance communication capabilities, the new sign will provide an array of uses and wide range of benefits for residents and visitors alike.

“Both past and current council noted the value of communicating through the digital sign,” said Sparwood Mayor David Wilks. “When it was clear that the old electronic sign was nearing the end of its usable life, council budgeted and planned for its replacement. Carefully considering many aspects, such as location and parameters of use for the former sign, council chose a sign that would be accessible, have quality resolution, and be capable of displaying full color text, photos, and videos.

“Recently, a new policy was approved for sign use, allowing for a broad range of subsidized and free access for the community to promote their non-profit events and activities within the municipality. Council is looking forward to being able to increase our capacity to communicate with residents, support community groups in promoting key events and activities, and showcase district amenities and attractions to visitors who stop by the Titan along their way.”

To facilitate the display of all the community has to offer, the district will be launching a ‘Showcase Sparwood’ campaign asking residents to send photos and videos of aspects they most enjoy within the community for future use on the digital sign.

The sign will be in testing phase over the coming weeks, with full operation and community access available early in the New Year.
