Terry Horton honoured as Area A Volunteer of the Year

Terry Horton has been officially recognized as the 2024 Electoral Area A Volunteer of the Year.

“Terry has made invaluable contributions to the seniors in our community as a volunteer at Rocky Mountain Village for over a decade,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area A Director Thomas McDonald.

“She was instrumental in the creation of the Music and Memory program that has improved the quality of life for countless seniors.”

During the development of the Music and Memory program, Terry spent time interviewing seniors and the families to come up with specific music tailored to each senior. She spent time at home downloading the playlists onto I-Pod shuffles and travelled as far as Calgary sourcing out additional listening devices so that more seniors could benefit from the program.

Her dedication is apparent in her weekly three to four-hour visits, spending time with residents, and providing music.

She also assists in educating Nursing, Resident Care Aides, students, families, and other volunteers about the Music and Memory program.

Terry has further impacted seniors and the community in general by volunteering for a music group called the Station Strings, sitting on the RDEK Accessibility Advisory Committee, and acting as a board member of the BC Choral Federation representing the Kootenays.

“Terry has greatly impacted the Rocky Mountain Village organization and its residents, adding enjoyment to their lives and providing positive memories,” added McDonald. “We are grateful that she gives her time so generously to all of her voluntary efforts.”

Director McDonald formally recognized Horton last night at a celebration in her honour at the Fernie Best Western.
