Be More Chill runs May 3 to 6 at McKim Theatre
My name is Jasmine Brenton and I have been in the music program at Selkirk Secondary School for the last five years, and I could not imagine a better group of people to spend my high school time with.
The program offers an amazing selection of classes for such a small community, and so many opportunities for trips and festivals. One of my favourite classes has been Vocal Jazz; a smaller group of singers that participates in jazz festivals, records music, and goes carolling.
Mr. Heyde, our director, does an incredible job of incorporating his passion for music into his teaching. Every year he presents engaging and unique repertoire that is always fun to practice and perform. The music program at Selkirk has taught me so much, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it has given me.
This year our school is putting on a show called Be More Chill that is running from May 3 to 6 at McKim Theatre.
This show is about a group of students all with very different high school experiences. As the show progresses, the characters begin to connect as they look past the original stereotypes and labels they placed on one another.
Be More Chill is a universally interesting show as each character displays a different aspect of the troubles that teenagers face. These troubles range from the insecurities of a popular girl to the loneliness one feels after the loss of a friendship.
I am looking forward to playing Christine in this show; she is an extremely passionate and expressive theatre girl who is not afraid to be confident in who she is.
My favourite part of this process has been in the last couple of weeks as we have begun to run through the full acts. It is amazing to see the world we have been creating these past months develop into a musical we can all be proud of. I am so excited to be a part of this production, and hope everyone can come watch it!
Be More Chill runs at McKim Theatre in Kimberley from May 3-6. Tickets are $20, and $15 for students and seniors.
Tickets are available at Huckleberry Books in Cranbrook, and Snowdrift Café and Selkirk School office in Kimberley.
