Ivan E. Coyote to tell stories at Kaleidoscope festival
Canadian spoken word performer, writer, filmmaker, and LGBTQ advocate Ivan E. Coyote will be telling stories Thursday evening, August 23, in Studio 64 as the highlight performer at this year’s Kimberley Kaleidoscope arts festival.
“Coyote is to Canadian literature what k d lang is to country music; a beautifully odd fixture,” stated the Ottawa Xpress. CBC described Coyote as “a gender-bending author who loves telling stories and performing in front of a live audience.”
Anyone who attended Coyote’s last appearance at Centre 64 a few years ago will confirm those statements emphatically.
Coyote has been touring festivals all summer, starting at the Atlin, BC, Arts & Music Festival, then on to the Hillside Summer festival in Guelph, Ontario and the Saskatchewan Festival of Words in Moose Jaw before departing for Sweden where he performed at both the Gothenburg and Stockholm Culture Festivals, returning just a few days ago to fly up to the Kimberley to appear at the Kaleidoscope arts festival.
Over the past 20 years he has appeared at all manner of festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam, made dozens of school appearances, and conducted many writing workshops. In addition to appearing on stage, Coyote has written 11 books including a novel, recorded three albums combining story-telling with music, and made four short films, winning several awards in the process.
On Thursday evening the spoken word event will kick off with a bevy of local writers reading from their works, accompanies by the flute-playing of Khoji Vihara.
Included in this opener to the main event will be Lori Craig, Thea De Paoli, Ruth Ramdin, Molly Craig, Lawrence Gregory, and Mike Redfern.
The doors open at 7:30 p.m. for an 8 p.m start. Seating will be cabaret-style and there will be a no-host bar.
Tickets are $25 adults, $15 youth under 19, available from Centre 64 (250-427-4919). The spoken word event is sponsored by Pacific Coastal Airlines.
