Mark Creek Flume project honoured
A Kimberley company was honoured last week with an Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) award for Mark Creek Flume Flood Management and Stream Rehabilitation project.
Aqua-Tex Scientific Consulting Ltd. received the 2017 Environmental Award for the project (pictured in part above).
“The design and oversight of the Mark Creek Flume Flood Management and Stream Rehabilitation project in Kimberley, was undertaken by a small, interdisciplinary team of ecologists and engineers working closely together to achieve the goals of flood protection and safety for the city, habitat restoration for the health of the creek, and creation of an attractive water feature that residents and visitors alike could enjoy. This is the first example in B.C. of a concrete channel being replaced by a naturalized stream channel in an urban area,” the EGBC stated.
Brian LaCas, Evan Sykes and Cori Barraclough attended the awards ceremony to receive the honour.
“The award is a big deal, because it usually goes to big multi-disciplinary firms, not small firms, and I do not know of any others that have recognized ecological consulting firms like ours,” Barraclough told e-KNOW. “Having grown up in Kimberley and seeing the creek when it was bright orange from the acid drainage, it feels pretty good to have been able to transform it back into a feature that the community can be proud of.”
