National series Skimo race coming to Kimberley
We are super stoked to be hosting a new event making its debut at Kimberley Alpine Resort on Jan. 31 – Feb. 2.
Proudly named, The North Star Skimo Race, it is the second stop on the Canada Cup circuit and promises thrilling racing action for athletes and spectators alike.
This event is part of the national Skimo race series, where results count towards national rankings and can help athletes earn spots on the Canadian National Teams.
With Skimo making its Olympic debut at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games, Canada’s top racers are gearing up for World Cup events in Europe this winter—don’t miss your chance to be part of this exciting sport!
Each event has an elite division for seasoned Skimo racers and a recreational division for those in more traditional alpine touring equipment.
Here’s a sneak peek of the Skimo disciplines we’ll be racing:
Vertical (Friday, Jan. 31)
A race from base to top of Easter. Fastest to the finish line wins! No downhill skiing—just pure climbing power.
Kickturn Sprint (Saturday, Feb. 1)
Short, fast, and action-packed! Athletes race solo for qualifying times, then compete in heats, battling side by side through gates and up the mountain. Perfect for spectators!
Individual (Sunday, Feb. 2)
The ultimate test of endurance and skill, a longer, more technical route with at least three ascents, three descents, and bootpack sections. Covering some of Kimberley’s best terrain.
Whether you’re a racer or a spectator, come join us for a weekend full of Skimo action and community spirit in Kimberley.
Skimo Canada describes the growing sport as: Ski mountaineering racing, or skimo, also referred to as randonnée racing, is an exciting, human-powered winter sport that combines skiing uphill and downhill with mountaineering skills.
