Nitros’ hope to prolong season in Grand Forks tonight

The Kimberley Dynamiters lost a heartbreaking game four at the Civic Centre April 2, a 3-2 overtime outcome to the Grand Forks Border Bruins.

The Nitros are down three games to one in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s (KIJHL) Kootenay Conference finals and head back to Grand Forks’ Jack Goddard Memorial Arena tonight (Friday, April 4) for game five.

Levi Astill’s overtime winner in Kimberley April 2 has the Border Bruins one win away from advancing to their first ever KIJHL Teck Cup Final.

The Border Bruins erased a 2-0 deficit in the third period starting with a power-play goal by Tyler Burke (Carter Price, Ben Edwards) and Nathan Flanagan (Price) with his first of the playoffs at 8:12 of the period.

Astill’s winner came 1:31 into overtime as he was able to grab a loose puck and fire it past Josh Hager, who made 34 saves.

It’s the first time the Dynamiters lost a game in the playoffs leading after two periods.

Eric Kahl was excellent for the Border Bruins with a 43-save performance, giving up goals to Tristan Weill (Justin Sommer, Nate Tillmanns) late in the first period and Remy Spooner (Weill, Danik Reeves) on the power-play with five minutes remaining in the second period.

Attendance was 999. Visit the gamesheet for full stats report.

Game six, if necessary, will be Saturday, April 5 in Kimberley and game seven is scheduled for Monday, April 7 back in Grand Forks. All game times are 7 p.m. local.
