Notes from City Hall

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Community Initiatives & Affected Areas Program Funding

Each year, the Regional District of East Kootenay, under the direction of the CBT, supports projects identified as priorities within individual communities. The programs are designed to help address the needs of Basin communities and incorporate community-based funding decisions (by council) to better meet local priorities. Applications are due to the RDEK by 9 a.m. on February 14. Late applications will not be accepted. Please visit for more information.

Committee Volunteer Opportunity – Board of Variance

The City of Kimberley invites applications from community members interested in becoming a member of the Board of Variance. One three-year term position is available. The board is responsible for reviewing and making decisions on requests to vary, or relax, development regulations such as building size and siting requirements. The deadline for submissions is February 6. Please see our website for more information or contact [email protected].

Snow Piles Around the city

We would like to remind residents of the dangers of children sliding on snow piles that accumulate from plowing and scraping the roads, especially the ones around Mark Creek. The water moves quickly in the creek and the ice is always changing, creating a dangerous area. The snow is often heavy and full of ice chunks, which can also cause injury. Please remind your children that these snow piles are not a safe place to be playing.

Snow Hauling

Please give city staff room to operate during snow removal. In areas where snow piles are to be hauled away, the city will post temporary “No Parking” signs the afternoon before snow hauling commences.  Vehicles will be towed if they do not comply with the signage.

Frozen Water Line Prevention

If the water service line to your home has ever frozen or you have noticed a reduced water flow in your home during the winter, leave one tap running cold water day and night (stream should be the size of a pencil). This will help to prevent your lines from freezing.  Since frost sinks deeper into the ground when air temperatures rise after a period of extreme cold, you will need to keep the water running 24/7 until mid-April to avoid having the line freeze.

The city encourages residents who have experienced frozen water service lines in the past to be pro-active by ensuring indoor lines are properly insulated, keeping a good snow cover over the ground above the service lines and installing a bleeder line system. For more information please visit HERE and select Preventing Frozen Water Service Lines from the Fall/Winter drop down menu.
