Notes from City Hall

Brownbag Lunch with Mayor McCormick

On Wednesday, December 12, and on the second Wednesday of each month, City of Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick will host a brown-bag luncheon at City Hall from noon until 1:30 p.m. Bring your own lunch and have a discussion with the Mayor.

Snow and Ice Management Plan

At the November 26 regular council meeting, council received the 2018-2019 Snow and Ice Management Plan. This plan is revised annually with incremental improvements, and is a guide to the city’s snow and ice control policies intended to advise the public, Council, and city staff of when and how snow and ice will be dealt with by the Operations Department. Please visit HERE to view the plan and other important information about snow removal.

2019 Dog Licenses

A common phrase heard at City Hall is “Why should I license my dog? My dog never gets out of the yard!” You would be surprised at the different ways a dog can end up running at large, and this can cost you a pocket full of cash. When dealing with dogs at large, the goal of the Animal Control Officer is to reduce the amount of stress experienced when a dog is impounded. If your dog is licensed you will receive a phone call, your dog will not need to be transferred to the Cranbrook SPCA, and your faithful pal can be returned home. The welfare of your dog is of utmost importance to us, and avoiding a trip to the pound is the best thing for your pet.

2019 dog licenses are now on sale at City Hall. The cost for a spayed or neutered dog license is $23 and $57.50 for an unaltered dog license. The fines for an unlicensed dog are as follows: $100 for the first offence, and $200 for each subsequent offence. Please help our Animal Control Officer make sure your pet gets home without a trip to the SPCA, and license your dog today!

2019 Business Licences

The city kindly requests that Business Licences be renewed and paid for before January 31. Application forms for new businesses are available at City Hall or on the City’s web site. With our Inter-Community Business Licenses, Mobile businesses can operate in Kimberley and Cranbrook without having to apply for businesses licences from both municipalities. For more information on fees and who can apply, please view the full bylaw on our website.

If you no longer require your Dog Licence or Business Licence, or need to update your contact information for these, please contact City Hall at 250-427-5311.

Clearing Snow and Ice

Icy sidewalks can be a hazard for everyone including seniors, children, mail carriers, meter readers, firefighters, and paramedics. As the weather warms up and then freezes again, water from melting snow can run onto cleared sidewalks.

Here are a few tips to help maintain your walkways and driveways:

  • Warm weather during the day can make ice soft, so it’s easier to chip or shovel away.
  • Spread sand or gravel on icy patches to make your sidewalk safer for pedestrians. Spreading sand on a sidewalk before ice forms can also make future ice easier to remove.
  • Microwaving sand in a microwave-safe container and spreading it while it is still warm will make the sand embed itself into the ice, creating a gritty top layer.
  • De-icing products are available at local retailers and can be helpful with ice control.
  • Pile snow in a place where it will not run across your sidewalk when it melts and aim your downspouts away from areas where people walk.

Pursuant to section 507 of the City of Kimberley Streets and Traffic Amendment Bylaw No. 2582, 2017, snow and ice cleared from your sidewalk or driveway onto a city street or sidewalk is not permitted. Putting snow out onto the City street or sidewalk can become a public safety concern.

Angle Parking

The city would like to remind residents that angle parking is not permitted in the City of Kimberley, unless otherwise posted. Angle parking impedes snow plowing and narrows the traveled portion of the street, which obstructs the safe passage of emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks. Thank you for your cooperation.
