Proposed Kimberley Rural Fire Protection Service discussed

Over 50 people attended a public information meeting last night (Oct. 2) to learn more about the proposed Kimberley Rural Fire Protection Service.

“Our staff and Kimberley Fire Chief Will Booth did an excellent job of not only providing the details of the proposed service, but in answering the questions that came forward from the public. I was pleased to see such a strong turnout and want to thank everyone who attended,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Area C Director and Board Chair Rob Gay.

Throughout the evening presenters provided detailed information on the way the service would operate if approved by voters, along with the projected costs, impacts on taxation, the elector assent process and who is eligible to vote. The evening rounded out with an opportunity for questions and answers from the floor.

“While this was one opportunity to get information on the proposed service, it is not the only way people can make sure they have all the information they need to make an informed decision when they cast their ballot,” said RDEK Electoral Area E Director Jane Walter.

“For anyone who was unable to attend the meeting in person, there are several resources available on the project page and the RDEK staff are available to answer questions about all aspects of the proposed service.”

In addition to the information packages that were sent to all property owners, the slides with the information that was shared at the meeting will be posted on the project page by the end of the week and a video recording of the presentations will be posted by early next week. The project page can be found here.

The proposed Kimberley Rural Fire Protection Service would be provided by the City of Kimberley to properties within a portion of the St. Mary Lake Road and Wycliffe areas that are 13km from the fire hall.

The General Assent Vote will be held on October 26, 2024, with an advance voting opportunity on October 16.
